Reigning African champions D’Tigress of Nigeria has been drawn in Group B of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 alongside Hungary, South Korea and France.
The draw for the 16-team tournament was held at the Kraftwerk Berlin in Germany on Tuesday, with the participating countries distributed into four groups (A-D), each consisting of four teams.
Group A features host Germany, Spain, Japan and Mali; Group C includes Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico, while the United States, Czechia, Italy and China will face one another in Group D.
The tournament, which is scheduled to take place in Berlin from September 4 to 13, would be Nigeria’s third appearance in the competition.
Nigeria made its FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup debut in 2006 but failed to make it past the group stage. The D’Tigress didn’t qualify again until 2018, when it finished in the quarterfinals.
Despite qualifying, the West African country withdrew from the 2022 edition after former President Muhammadu Buhari announced a two-year withdrawal from all international basketball competitions.
The decision followed a longstanding leadership crisis inside the Nigeria Basketball Federation.
