President Bola Tinubu has continued to issue “turgid” press statements condemning violent attacks one after another without corresponding action to rein in rampaging bandits and terrorists, says Amnesty International.

It accused Mr Tinubu of “failing” to protect Nigerians in the wake of fresh violent attacks in Jos, pointing out that issuing “turgid statements” to console victims are not substitute for decisive action.

In a statement on Tuesday, the rights oranisation urged Mr Tinubu’s government to urgently investigate the “inexcusable” security lapses that resulted in the deadly Palm Sunday attack on Anguwan Rukuba community in Jos North LGA.

“Nigerian authorities’ failure to tame the tide of this violence is costing people’s lives and livelihoods, and without immediate action, many more lives may be lost.

“While President Bola Tinubu has been promising to implement new measures to address the rising insecurity in the country, the attacks in Plateau state and recently in parts of Benue, Zamfara and Kebbi highlight that safeguarding lives and property is not a priority for the current government.

“Issuing turgid statements condemning the attacks is not enough and genuine commitment to protecting the people must be demonstrated by adequately protecting lives, holding suspected perpetrators to account and ensuring justice,” said Amnesty International.

Amnesty International also noted that the location, timing and nature of the attack underscored the growing vulnerability of citizens, adding that more bodies were still being recovered and taken to morgues.

According to the organisation, Plateau is becoming increasingly unsafe, with the disturbing pattern of attacks spreading from rural to urban communities, revealing that the authorities have left the affected locals to the mercy of rampaging bandits.

Following the latest attack, the Plateau government imposed a 48-hour curfew on the Jos North LGA, stating that it would take effect from midnight of March 29 to April 1, 2026.
