President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday hurriedly assented to the controversial electoral bill passed by the Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The president signed the bill into law at the State House with some members of the National Assembly present. 

The National Assembly had on Tuesday passed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill.

The lower legislative chamber, however, recorded rowdy sessions as opposition lawmakers staged a walkout chanting “APC, ole” (thief) to protest the passage.

The lawmakers favoured mandatory real-time transmission of poll results on INEC’s result viewing portal (IReV).

“They have collected money!” shouted one of the lawmakers whose face the camera did not capture.

There had been protests since last week over the failure of the Nigerian Senate to expunge a caveat that allows manual transmission of election results whenever there is internet connection failure from Clause 60(3) of the amended electoral bill.

Peoples Gazette had earlier compiled a list of major changes in the Electoral Act amendment bill now assented to by Mr Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
