Super Eagles players and officials have arrived in Marrakech ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal match against Algeria, shelving an earlier threat made by the team to boycott the trip over payment dispute with the Nigeria Football Federation. 

The players’ trip to Marrakech followed a confirmation by deputy finance minister Doris Uzoka-Anite on Thursday that the federal government had streamlined the processing of the outstanding payments to allow the team to start receiving their bonuses either immediately or on Friday.

“All group-stage bonuses have been fully released and cleared required regulatory stages,” Ms Uzoka-Anite said. “There will be no further administrative delays. The final transfers to players’ domiciliary accounts are in flight and should reflect today or tomorrow.”

The team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, also confirmed that the team would be lodging at the Savoy Le Grand Hotel, with the players expected to train later on Thursday. 

Meanwhile, the team will quickly move to put the recent distractions, including the on-field clash between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, which had since been resolved, behind them to fully focus on the task ahead. 

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Efoghe, said, “The primary reasons and aftermath of the on-the-field remonstration between two of our players during the game against Mozambique have been nipped internally.”

Saturday’s match is an important match for Nigeria, as the country seeks revenge for the brutal knockout in the semifinals of the 2019 AFCON by the Algerians, courtesy of a late free-kick strike by Riyad Mahrez.
